The Rwenzori Health Swim Challenge

Registration and Recovery, 5 August 2023

Today I had to pick up my accreditation from the World Aquatics Registration Centre. I had a good nights’ sleep although woke up a couple of times and finally about 6am. The hotel had a pool; so first things first I decided to explore its whereabouts. To my amazement, apart from it being located in the Spa and Fitness Centre, it turned out to be a 4-lane pool, with two 20m lanes and two 25m lanes - perfect. So I thought I’d have some breakfast, go register and then come back and do an easy 1K to get the tiredness out of my legs.

At the accreditation centre, getting the necessary paperwork done was efficient. I also picked up the start times for my swims the next day. On my way out, I met Victor, an Argentinian swimming for an Italian club. So we assisted each other with taking the compulsory photos. It would be the closest I would get to a podium 😂

Back at the hotel and I had a really nice and easy swim. Had all the pool to myself. Jet lag caught up with me and before I knew it I had crashed out once more. Two hours later and I was back in the land of the living - just in time for dinner. Butterflies were beginning to seriously flutter. I was competing in two races the next day - the 100m freestyle and the 100m breaststroke. Reality hadn't quite hit me that I was at the Masters Swimming World Championships. Lying in bed l kept mentally visualizing each race. And again fell asleep counting strokes rather than sheep 🏊🏻‍♂️😴
